NELLIE ANTOINETTE BUSEY BELOIT, Wis. - Nellie Antoinette Busey died on June 26, 2008, in the Home Bridge Care Facility (formerly the Biltmore) in Belvidere, Ill. Born Dec. 18, 1922, in Beloit, the daughter of James Dallas and Mary Margaret (Koch) Busey. Graduated valedictorian of her class from South Beloit, Ill., High School and went on to graduate from Northern Illinois University, and in 1946, received her master's degree from the University of Iowa. An accomplished musician, her dream was to be a piano accompanist, but she went into teaching instead and taught for more than 40 years. Nellie taught in public schools in Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota and Illinois. As an only child, she returned to Rockford to teach and to help care for grandparents and parents. She taught social studies at Guilford High School for 24 years, retiring in 1986.

Nellie was a dedicated teacher, and former students still maintained contact with her. Nellie loved to travel, visiting 25 countries. In 1962, she received a Fulbright to India and in 1964, received a second Fulbright to study in Iran. At that time she also traveled in Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan. Nellie loved all animals, and for many years her dog, Joey, was her constant companion. When it became difficult for her to care for a dog, she switched her affection to cats. Prior to entering the care facility in Belvidere, she and her beloved cat, Alexander "Alex" lived in the Grand Victorian in Rockford where she was affectionately known as the "cat lady." Member of Zeta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma. Former member of the Winnebago County Retired Teachers Association. She was predeceased by parents. Survivors include cousins; many friends; former students; and special friend, William Galaway of Palm Springs, Calif. Memorial service of remembrance at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, in Rosman-Uehling-Kinzer Funeral Home, 1125 Cranston Road, Beloit. A lunch will follow at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers send memorials to Fund for Animals or to the American Parkinson Disease Association.

WILLIAM ROGERS DURHAM PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - William R. Durham of Palm Springs, formerly of Belvidere, Ill., passed away suddenly April 29, 2009, in the Emergency Room at Dessert Regional Hospital. Born Aug. 15, 1935, in Mendota, Ill., the son of Lyal Weeks and Harriet (Riegel) Durham. He graduated from Mendota High School in 1953, and graduated with a B.A. from Monmouth College (Illinois) and with an M.A. from the University of Northern Colorado. He was a lifelong member of Theta Chi Fraternity and member of the National Honorary Theatre Society, Alpha Psi Omega. Bill was a teacher for 35 years, teaching in Venezuela, Nebraska and Illinois. The past 24 years of his career he taught speech and drama at Guilford High School in Rockford , Ill. He was a Mason for 48 years and a life member of the Samuel H. Davis Lodge No. 96 in Mount Morris, Ill.

In addition to theatre, his lifelong interest was antiques and for several years he combined teaching and his love of antiques, doing trade shows during the summer and school breaks. Upon retiring, with his partner he opened the Home Place Antiques in Belvidere, which he operated for 14 years before moving to Palm Springs. He was an active member of the Belvidere community. He served on the board of the Boone County Community Building, was a past president of the Boone County Historical Society, the first president of Belvidere Main Street Center, on the vestry of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church for several years, and was a founding member of the Main Street Players. In 2004, just prior to moving to Palm Springs, he received an Outstanding Volunteer Service Recognition Award for promoting the city of Belvidere Downtown Business District.

Upon moving to Palm Springs, Bill became active in his condominium association and served as president of the Homeowners Association Board for two years. His love of antiques led him to volunteer many hours a week at the Desert Aids Project's Revivals resale shops. In 2009, he was recognized for 3,000 hours of volunteer service to DAP. He is survived by his life partner of 44 years, Bill Galaway; special friend, Joe Musser; sister, Mary Borth of Tonica; sisters-in-law, Betty Durham of Mendota and Pauline Durham of Moline; and brothers-in-law, Raymond Maciejewski of Mendota, and Charles Rogers of Sycamore; and many friends. Predeceased by parents, four brothers and three sisters. Service will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, in Belvidere, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the William R. Durham Drama-Theater Scholarship Fund/Community Foundation of Northern Illinois, 946 N. Second St. Rockford , IL 61107, the Boone County Historical Society, Belvidere, or to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Belvidere.

MARY-HOPE C. FERRARA, 73 GARDEN PRAIRIE - Mary-Hope C. Ferrara, 73, of Garden Prairie died early Sunday morning, April 22, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her death. Mary-Hope was born Oct. 28, 1933, in Chester, Conn., the daughter of Albert and Mary (Albanese) Carini. She graduated from Chester High School in 1951, where she was the class valedictorian. She earned her bachelor's degree from Simmons College in Boston in 1955, and her master's degree in Education from Boston University in 1958.

Mary-Hope Carini married Dr. Thomas J. Ferrara on Feb. 6, 1954, in Chester. The couple moved to Belvidere in 1963. Mary-Hope's lifelong love was teaching. She spent more than 40 years teaching in the Belvidere and Rockford public school systems. She spent much of her career at Rockford Guilford High School, where she taught in the Home Economics department. She taught courses in early childhood development, marriage and family living, house design, food preparation, and sewing. Mary-Hope was an innovator in early childhood development. She was instrumental in developing the first high school pre-school program in the Rockford School system. In 1965, to meet a growing need for early childhood care and development, she founded Kiddie Kollege Day Care and Pre- School in Belvidere. She retired from the Rockford Public School system in 1996.

After her retirement Mary-Hope continued to nurture our youth as a substitute teacher for the Catholic Diocese of Rockford, St. James School in Belvidere, and Kishwaukee Elementary in Garden Prairie. She dearly loved, and was loved, by the children in each of those schools. Her substitute teaching career remained a top priority throughout her retirement. Prior to and during retirement, Mary-Hope and her husband, Tom, spent many weeks each year traveling the globe and enjoying the many wonders the world has to offer. Through their travels and their involvement in The Sister Cities Program, they built many lasting friendships not only around the world, but right here in their own backyard.

Cooking was Mary-Hope's passion. She grew up in a restaurant family. She taught classes and conducted seminars in Italian food and culture. From choosing the recipe, shopping for the ingredients, preparing and presenting the meal, to eating her creations, Mary-Hope loved all aspects of food. She was well-known for her brownie treats. Mary-Hope's faith guided her many volunteer and community activities. Mary-Hope was a member of St. James Catholic Church, former president of St. James Catholic Daughters, St. James School Education Commission, St. James Why Catholic, Catholic Women's League, Rockford Diocese Woman of the Year 2004, Caritas Woman of the Year 2007, Board of Directors for Boone County Council on Aging, Board of Directors Belvidere Sister Cities, former member of Zonta International, St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, former member of Ostende Dance Club, former member of the Gourmet Club, Rockford Retired Teachers Association and the Winnebago-Boone Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Thomas J. Ferrara of Garden Prairie; children, Marirose (John Mullin) Ferrara of Oak Park, Dr. Hope (Dr. Richard Snively) Ferrara Snively of Herndon, Va., Carina (Jeffery Furst) Ferrara-Furst of Rockford ; grandchildren, Sabina Ferrara Mullin, 24, Lena Ferrara Mullin, 16, Michael Snively, 19, Lauren Snively, 17, Carly Snively, 15, Joseph Thomas Snively, 11, Thomas Ferrara Furst, 6, Alexander Furst, 3, Isabel Furst, 3; sister-in-law, Mary Timothy of Rockford . Mary-Hope is also survived by many friends in her teaching, volunteer and religious activities and lengthy travels. Mary-Hope is predeceased by her parents.

Liturgy of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 27, in St. James Catholic Church, Belvidere, with the Rev. Thomas Brantman celebrating. Prayers will be at 10 a.m. in Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Funeral Home, 218 W. Hurlbut Ave., Belvidere. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in the funeral home with a prayer and personal reflection service at 8 p.m. Memorials can be made in honor of Mary-Hope C. Ferrara to the St. James Elementary School Scholarship Fund, 535 Caswell St., Belvidere, IL , 61008.

Todd Winfield Jackson, 51, Rockford, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, after sustaining fatal injuries from an accident. He was born January 14, 1962, in Rockford, the son of Charles and Jill Jackson. Todd graduated from Rockford Guilford High School and participated in comedy courses at Second City in Chicago. He served 4 years in the Navy travelling around the world on the USS New Orleans. Todd was a Deputy Clerk at the Winnebago County Circuit Clerk's Office. He had a knack for making others laugh and lighting up the room. Todd was an avid Chicago Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawks fan. He loved music and the theatre arts. Special thanks to the Rockford Police Department, Crime Stoppers, and the Winnebago County Coroner's office for their professionalism, kindness, and support.


Todd leaves behind to cherish his memory his parents, Charles and Jill; his brother, Mike (Rita) Jackson; his sister, Lisa (Brad) Nemeth; his nieces, Rachel, Jillian, and Anjeli; and his nephew, Nicholas; his aunts and uncles, Ruth Jackson, Mark Teismann, Diane Tegland, Ed Tegland, Jeff and Sharon Fritzlen, Joanne and Larry Longman and special friend, Colleen Quinn.


Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 3300 Rural St. with Reverend Jeffrey Fricke officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Monday, October 7, 2013, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. and from 11:00 am until 12:45 pm on Tuesday at the church. There will be refreshments at the church immediately following the memorial service. Kallal, 30, Rockford, died Monda, August 16, 1993 of injuries sustained ni a bicycle/automobile accident.  Born March 4, 1963 in Chicago, the son of David and Judith Kalal.  Moved to Rockford in 1976.  Gradated from Guilfrord Hig Shol and Northern Illinois University.  Loving husband of the former Karen Lyon; beloved son of David nad Judith Balzer Kallal; dearest brother of Kinberly and Kevin Kallal; fond grandson of Edward and the late Anna Kallal of Florida, and Roman and the late Julia Bajzer; dear son-in-law of Vi Lyon and Bud Lyon of Rockford; brother-in-law of Susan (Todd) Johnson, Indiana, and Kevin (Vicki) Lyon; many dear aunts, uncles, cousins,nephews, nieces and friends.  Employed by W.A, Whitney Company.

Just happened to goggle old friends and saw the Dave passed away. You may remember me as Dave's neighborhood friend along with Frank Bobak, Pat Maley and Joe Schuch from Darien, Il on Sawyer Rd/Portsmouth Dr.

We went to Cass Jr High school and played on the football and basketball team together with coach  John Morey. I lost track of him when he moved to Rockford.....

Sorry to hear and wish your family the best! I can't believe his accident happened 21 years ago.....

JAMES H. KOEHN, 77 ROCKFORD - James H. Koehn, 77, of Rockford died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, in Rockford Memorial Hospital, after a nine month battle with lymphoma. He was the son of Herman F. and Eula (Date) Koehn. Married Bessie Hagy on June 4, 1955, in Scales Mound. Graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Platteville in 1952 with a B.S. in mathematics and from Northern Illinois University in 1957 with a masters in education. James taught math at Warren High School and Roosevelt Jr. High, prior to 26 years at Guilford High School, where he retired as the head of the department of mathematics in 1989. He then worked for Rockford Blacktop as an estimator until his early 70's.

 

James served as a sergeant in the Army during the Korean conflict from 1952 to 1954. Survived by his wife of 53 years, Bess; daughters, Deborah Koehn (Brenda Borkenhagen) of Schaumburg, Kathryn of Rockford and Sandra (Mark) Green of St. Charles; granddaughters, Rosalie and Evelyn Green; sister, Verneal (late John) Korn of Rockford; brother, Robert (Kay) Koehn of Racine; and very supportive dear friend, Connie Phillips. Predeceased by parents; infant son, David; and infant brother, Lee.

 

Service at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, in Court Street United Methodist Church, 215 N. Court St., Rockford, with the Rev. Keith A. Kelsey-Powell officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, in Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Ave., also from 10 a.m. Thursday to time of service in the church.
